The MPU is owned by LCLT and operated by the Island Grown Farmers Co-op. It is the first to be sanctioned by the U.S. Agriculture Department — and shuttles from farm to farm three or four days a week on Lopez Island, collecting fresh carcasses of cows, pigs and sheep that will become steaks, sausage, bacon and hamburgers.
