LCLT in the News
LCLT’s Common Ground neighborhood is featured in the article “Pushing Zero” by Jenny Sullivan in the June 2010 issue of Builder magazine: http://www.builderonline.com.
On June 10th Lopez Community Land Trust “Common Ground” received the 2010 Annual Golden Nuggets Grand Award for “Green Sustainable Community of the Year” at the Pacific Coast Builders Conference (PCBC). Lopez Community Land Trust’s fourth affordable housing neighborhood and net-zero community was one of two to receive the Grand Award in this category. PCBC represents the 14 Western States and the Pacific Rim. This award recognizes those who improve our communities through exceptional concepts in design, planning and development. Grand award winners were announced at a luncheon in San Francisco and receive a trophy that looks like a 1 inch gold nugget in acrylic. This makes the fourth award granted to the Lopez Common Ground Project.
On June 7th at the annual AIA Seattle What Makes It Green? Awards program the Lopez Community Land Trust Common Ground neighborhood was awarded one of only five awards out of 11 finalists and dozens of entrants. The Honorable Mention Award was one of two, the other going to Miller Hull for the Port Townsend Boat Center. Two Silver Awards included the restoration of King Street Station by ZGF, and a Portland High-rise with wind turbines also by ZGF. The single Gold award went to LMN for their Vancouver Canada Convention Center. Among heavy competition by very large projects, LCLT’s Fourth Housing Neighborhood on Lopez Island, targeted at Zero Net Energy, was recognized and lauded by the jury!
- On February 24, 2010, the Lopez Community Land Trust was awarded first prize in the “new construction” category by the National Association of State Community Services Programs (NASCSP) in Washington, DC. NASCSP members are state administrators of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Weatherization Assistance Program (DOE/WAP). The award is for Common Ground, and due in part to LCLT’s publication of the manual Land, Water, Energy, Resource Use: A System’s Approach. The award included a plaque; a short video of the project; an energy audit kit donated by Fluke including an infrared thermometer, laser distance meter and a dozen other devices; a trip to Austin Texas to attend the ACI National Home Performance Conference; high accuracy software for energy audits; and other training scholarships and certificates. The conference attendees spent one morning downtown at the Hall of States with staff of the Obama administration, focusing on national energy policy, jobs, the importance of energy conservation and the role it plays in our energy independence as a nation.
